AN ACT TO ADD §3222 TO CHAPTER 3 OF TITLE 17 GUAM CODE RELATIVE TO REQUIRING THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO ADMINISTER A CAREER INTEREST INVENTORY TO MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.
On February 28, 2011, Sam introduced Bill 94 – an Act that requires GDOE to administer a Career Interest Inventory to Middle and High School Students.
This legislation is part of her priority to develop workforce development and Career and Technical Education. The legislation recognizes the importance of the education of our youth, and preparing them for the real world.
School districts throughout the nation have adopted career interest inventories for their students. Bill 94 will provide Guam public school students the opportunity to discover how their skill-sets match various careers.
Sam spoke with leading educators and professionals to gather research on best practices. Resulting is Bill 94, wherein the Guam Department of Education will work with Guam Community College and the University of Guam to develop, to plan and administer career interest inventories for middle and high school students.
Sam believes that it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that our island’s children are well-prepared for the world of work. Providing students the resources to do is so important for individual success. She is confident that students will enjoy the experience of discovering which careers and related post-secondary education or training matches their individual talents and skills. More importantly, students will gain better control and understanding of their education and direction, and our leaders can make better data-driven decisions in planning and preparing our workforce.
The Public Hearing held on March 17, 2011 provided constructive feedback that will be incorporated into a possible substitute bill.
